Not a non-fiction lover? Yeah, that’s what I thought too.

As a self-proclaimed fiction fanatic, I understand how difficult it can be to get through a nonfiction book, much less enjoy it. This could be for a variety of reasons, but at the end of the day, it most definitely is possible to venture out of your comfort zone, and have fun doing so.

As a part of the IB program (specifically through my global politics class), I’ve spent a lot of my time reading, thinking and talking about what I read, and then writing about it. To make this repetitive process as enjoyable as I could, I had to teach myself to truly get engrossed in non-fiction.

Ever since I managed to gain such interest, I’ve been able to proudly say that I read non-fiction recreationally. So, here’s a bookworm’s guide on how to start reading and enjoying non-fiction, from someone who once swore that there was nothing better than a 700 page fantasy novel. Oh, how the turn tables.

  • Pick books that explore topics you’re already passionate about.

It goes without saying that it’s easier to read about something you care bout vs something you don’t. In my experience, when I’m excited to learn about a topic, it’s a lot easier to ignore the fact that the book in my hands isn’t a 700 page novel.

  • Don’t push yourself to read at your usual pace.

Take your time to truly consider the material you’re consuming. Do you agree with the author’s sentiments? Are you surprised by something? If so, why? Digest the material, and reflect simultaneously.

  • Read with a buddy!

It helps to have someone to bounce your ideas off of as you read and vise versa. Having someone to discuss your thoughts with will motivate you and help keep you engaged.

  • Skim and do your research before diving in!

Before I begin reading a new nonfiction book, I usually look through it for things like glossaries, author's notes, forwards, and so on, and I read all of those artefacts for a few days before diving into the meat of the book. This helps me orient myself to the book's format while also providing valuable knowledge about words I may not be familiar with so that I don't lose confidence in my comprehension as I read.

There are so many great nonfiction books out there and so much knowledge to be gained. I hope this list helps you on your journey to being a nonfiction lover. Happy Reading!
